BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA.
Beloved, the lockdown adviced worldwide to prevent the spread of the Corona Virus has generated mixed feelings among citizens of most of the Middle and Low Income Countries.
In Nigeria for instance as much as many people appreciate the fact that the lockdown is for their benefit the situation in which a great percentage of people live below poverty line and only manage to eke out a living on a daily basis is not helping matters.
In Lagos State especially in the Lekki-Ajah axis, the street urchins and vagabonds (area boys) many of who are school drop outs and normally moonlight as bus conductors, drivers and agberos (vehicle loaders) have now taken to the streets as there are no means of their daily sustenance.
Banditry and armed robbery is now the order of the day as many of them snatch valuables from those in the streets and even break into locked-up shops claiming that they are hungry. They prefer the risk of being infected by the virus to dying of hunger and starvation. We are just one week into the lockdown and despite the Government's so-called relief & intervention package, we can only pray that the society will not be thrown into anarchy by the end of the stipulated two weeks which may be further extended.
The State Governments (Lagos in this example) and relevant Local Government Councils should as a matter of urgency fashion out ways in which many of those in this category can be reached in terms of distribution of relief materials. Many of them have no fixed addresses, hence this task might be a bit challenging.
Let us all, in unison, ask the CREATOR to divinely intervene, as our society is in a precarious position. We are now "between the devil and the deep blue sea."
