Beloved, as
Africans we truly have a challenge to conquer mass poverty and illiteracy that
is staring us in the face and threatening to wipe us out.
Illiteracy is
a disease that can only be attacked by designing an educational system that takes
into consideration our peculiar situation as Africans.
Our political
elite do not appreciate this fact, otherwise they would have declared a war on
mass illiteracy. It is because education has been relegated to the background
that we have this level of insecurity especially in Nigeria. The youths who
have dropped out of school and those that (due to poverty) were unable to go to
school, go into drugs, become street urchins, streets boys and ready candidates
to be recruited into the army of insurgency, kidnappers and robbers in the
country.
The youths of
a nation are the future of that nation. There is an urgent need for mass
re-orientation and change in the societal values from what is currently in vogue,
so as to refocus our youth to prepare for the challenges ahead.
The standard
of education has dropped to an extent that most students do not see anything
wrong in cheating to pass examination. The parents are not helping matters
because many of them pay big sums of money for their children to be assisted in
passing their exams.
I am of the
opinion that the educational system should be redesigned in such a way that the
Intelligence Quotient of students should not be based on written examinations
alone. Also a situation in which many illiterates live in affluence (especially
among the political elites) and many graduates are wandering all over in search
of non-existing jobs does not encourage the students to take their studies seriously.
The Feudal
system in the core North is also not helping matters. This is why the Majority
of the poor and illiterate are from that region of Nigeria. This is also why
the greatest insecurity is from that region.
We are sitting
on a time bomb which, if care is not taken will blow the country into pieces.
The present focus on ethnicity which is leading the country to the edge of a
precipice should be “nipped in the bud” because that is not important when we
consider the magnitude of the challenges facing us as a nation. Putting your
Kith and kin in strategic positions with a view to controlling the wealth and
wielding political power should not be the focus of the ruling elite. The Focus
should be eradicating mass illiteracy, poverty, insecurity and attending to the
welfare of the citizens through food security, health and employment
generation.
We should as
much as possible live in a secular society and push our religious differences
to the back burner.
May OLODUMARE
guide us in the journey ahead.
Shalom
