In our last discourse, the Northern
Political Elite were blamed for standing in the way of the progress and unity
of Nigeria.
However, the political Elite in the
Middle Belt and the South have their own share of the blame because it is their
complicity due to ego, selfishness and greed that has brought Nigeria to the
Cross roads that we presently find ourselves.
In their pretense to preventing a
breakup of Nigeria, they too have polarized their constituency along ethnic,
tribal and religious lines. They cooperated with the Northern Elite to maintain
the status quo, so that together with their kith and kin, they can continue to
share the “National Cake and milk the nation”.
Most of them go into politics to
“feather their nests”, and not to serve the people who elected them into
office.
Many of them stay in the corridor
of power for more than 3 terms because of the largesse that comes with maintaining
their positions. Many cross from the legislative arm of government to the
executive arm and vice versa, switching from one political party to the other
just to ensure that they remain relevant.
But the greatest fault lies with the
populace. The people in a nation determine the leadership that they deserve.
The average Nigerian has the mindset that those who are in positions of power
were placed there by the CREATOR, therefore their authority should not be
questioned.
Religion has really turned us into
docile people who can easily be manipulated. Once the political candidate is
from the same ethnic, tribal or religious background as ourselves we shy away
from questioning their authority and they get away with looting the government
treasury while they are in positions of power.
A very small part of the money they
steal from us is utilized in buying the votes of the electorates at the time of
election and the poor and mostly illiterate electorate forget that once these
politicians are re-elected, they are in for another round of looting.
We urgently need to focus on new
ways of choosing our leaders aside from the present Democratic set-up which has
not produced credible leadership in almost 21years of its inception.
If Nigeria must move on as a united
nation, new blood must be infused into the body politics and all the present
and past political elite must be barred from further taking up elective
positions.
We need to diligently search for
serious minded people who are focused and have a vision that will propel the
nation into a future that will be able to meet the needs of generations unborn.
Most importantly we must at all
costs avoid any civil war, as this will bring a lot of hardship and
bloodletting.
“We cannot afford to turn back the
hands of the clock”. We should either breakup peacefully as cohesive national
groups to form countries after a peacefully and properly negotiated sovereign
national conference so that this storm will not blow our nation apart.
May OLODUMARE guide us in taking
the right step forward.
